Creating Objectives and Assessment Materials

Introduction

In Phase 2, I design and develop measurable learning objectives related to the learning issue identified in phase 1. These objectives guide instruction and allow for technology incorporation.  In order to determine success of this project, assessment and measurement of progress will need to be included.  Assessment and measurement methods will be documented in this phase.

Objectives

  • Objective #1: Given a set of word problems, students will be able to interpret and formulate a mathematical equation from it without error.

  • Objective #2: Given a multistep mathematical problem, students will be able to present a correctly communicated solution with more than 90 % accuracy.

Measurement methods

Ultimately, after participating in this project, students will be able to perform better on unit tests than the data in Phase 1 shows they are currently performing.  This means that students should improve their scores on text-rich problems from <70% to >90%.  Two types of assessment will be used to monitor student progress throughout the project.

 

Students' progress will be informally assessed thrice during the practice week through formative assessments.  Formative assessment questions are be taken from past CIE examination papers and are those types of questions that students currently have difficulty interpreting.

 

The unit test is a written test similar to that used in Phase 1 to show that a learning issue exists.  Although it is written, the question format mimics the practice and check-in questions students encounter in formative assessment sessions.  Students' performance >90% on text-rich questions and questions that involve clear communication will indicate success of the technology intervention to address the learning issue.
